Assisi Bhavan
Assisi Bhavan, Konnakuzhy, is a Capuchin Presence in the eparchy of Irinjalakuda. It was much encouraged by the spirit of the Chapter of 2005, which says, “The Chapter is in favour of simple experimental life by two or three friars judged suitable by the Definitory”. A plot of land was purchased for this presence on 15 November 2005. It is situated on the banks of Athirappilly River. The experimental life started to function here on 15th of December 2005 by Brs. Antony Manjiyil and K.T. James.
It started with the aim of implementing the ideal of “Holding fast to the Gospel insights of St. Francis and to the tradition of the Order, we undertake as our specific responsibility to follow the poverty of our Lord Jesus Christ in simplicity of life and joyful austerity, in hard work, trust in providence, and in charity towards all.” As per the decision of Extraordinary Chapter of 2012 the three existing cottages were renovated and made them conducive for personal retreat and prayer days. Br. Francis Edattukaran joined the venture on 28th of December 2016. Another plot of 39 cents adjacent to the existing complex was bought on 19th of December 2017.
The life-style here involves a practice of contemplation, combining silence, simplicity of life and manual labour. It is also marked with availability to the people around, animal husbandry, writing of books, spiritual assistance to the SFO fraternities etc. The founding spirit seems to be concretized as frequent visits by Friars to spend a few days in prayer, reflection, or relaxation etc.… are being done.
