St. Thomas Capuchin Provincialate

St. Thomas Capuchin Provincialate

The plot for the purpose of constructing the Provincialate in Aluva, was bought on 30th of March 1977 from the family members of Mr. Peres, who were settled in Mangalore with the approval of the Extraordinary Chapter of 1976. All the arrangements for the purchase of the new plot were made by Br. Ignatius of Kuravilangad. His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Parekattil, Archbishop of Ernakulam, officially inaugurated and blessed the Provincialate on October 1st, 1977, after which it was canonically erected into an Ashram. A well-appointed museum with relics from the Missions of Malawi, Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, and from the Vocation Camp Exhibitions was built onto the bottom level of the Provincialate structure.

The Provincialate served as the administrative structure of St. Joseph Province till the bifurcation of the province on 25th of October, 1999. As a result of bifurcation two new provinces, St. Joseph and St. Thomas came to existence. As per the new understanding though it belonged to St. Thomas Province it still continued to be used as the Provincialate of St. Joseph Province and Nazareth Ashram became the temporary Provincialate of St. Thomas Province until 15th of April 2002. On 15th of April 2002, the Provincialate of St. Thomas Province was shifted from Nazareth Ashram to St. Thomas Capuchin Provincialate.

In the year 2000 a new structure was built on the foundation of an old building which was existing. This was named as Padre-Pio Block. In 2005 another block adjacent to Padre Pio Block was built. Later in 2010 a second floor was added to the latter with some living rooms. This structure is called Pax Centre. Occasionally it is used for conducting retreats for nuns and priests. In 2008 the museum was converted into Chapter Hall. On 2nd of January 2018 a new room with essential structures was constructed for the use of Archives.
