Capuchin Sevanalayam

This was the first site bought for the Ashram in the eparchy of Palakkad. After the Provincial Chapter of 1987 there was a Provincial decision to open a house in the eparchy of Palakkad. Mar Joseph Irumpan, the Bishop of Palakkad gave permission to build an Ashram at Pattikara which had been proposed for it. This plot measuring 2.53 acres was purchased on 17th August 1989. Br. Gerard Kallidukkil was deputed to build the new Ashram. On inquiry, it was found to be unsuitable for an ashram. Between 1993 – 96 Br. Francis Neelankavil did some preliminary works in this plot. In 1999, by the establishment of the St. Thomas Province, Br. Francis Edattukaran was entrusted with the construction works here. The Capuchin Swiss Province was the main donor of the constructions. Br. John Corriveau, the Minister General inaugurated the two-storied building, ‘Capuchin Sevanalayam’ and it was blessed by Mar Jacob Manathodathu, the Bishop of Palakkad, on 04th of April 2002.

From 2002 to 2008 this building was used as a centre for ‘Akashaparavakal’ (Care-home for the orphans and sick). In 2008 this project was shifted to Gagultha Retreat Centre at Kurumal. Later this building served as Boys’ Home (home for the boys of poor families). The project received the Certificate of Recognition from the Board of Control for Orphanages and Other Charitable Homes, in 2010. In July 2014 the building received an artistic face-lift by Br. Rojer Vazhappilly, was blessed by Br. Raphie Paliakara, the Minister Provincial.

A renewal of the building in view of housing the inmates from FOJ was done and it was blessed by Br. Pauly Madassery, the Minister Provincial on 03rd of September 2019. From 03rd of the same month it became a home for the Akashaparavakal again by admitting 14 inmates from the Gagultha FOJ. On 30th of September 2019 Br Paul Poovathingal, the Director, procured the Certificate of Recognition from the concerned Department, specifying the category as ‘Old Age & Beggar Home’.
