Calvary Ashram
It was Rt. Rev. Dr. George Alappat, the Bishop of Thrissur who invited the Capuchins to his Arch-eparchy. The land for the Ashram was given to us on 10th of May 1954 by Chev. Injodikaran Iyyappan at a nominal price He also helped us substantially towards the construction of the Chapel. With the formal invitation from the Bishop of Thrissur, the permission from General Curia and with an endorsement of the Oriental Congregation the foundation stone of the chapel was laid on 27th of February 1955. It was blessed on 14 September 1958 by His Excellency George Alappat. The friary and the chapel were built by Br. Athanasius Cheruvil.
In 1960, the friary was raised to a “Domus Formata”. To house the students, a large extension was put up by Br. Gerard Kallidukkil and it was blessed on 31st of May, 1961. In1972 it was declared one of the common study houses (Philosophy) of the four Indian Jurisdictions. From 1982 it ceased to be a common study house of the Indian Jurisdictions. From 1 July 1981 it followed an Integrated Course of Philosophy and Theology. But Theology was later shifted to St. Francis Theological College, Kottayam in 1986. With the formation of St. Thomas and St. Joseph in 1999, the administration and management of Calvary Philosophical College were entrusted to the St. Thomas Province. It continues to be serving the three jurisdictions of the Syro-Malabar Rite provinces in imparting Philosophical training to their student friars.
Another wing with 26 rooms in the first floor of students’ block was built in 1996 under the guidance of Br. Francis Christi, the Guardian and Rector. Two guest-rooms and counselling rooms near the parlour were added in 2003 when Br. Francis Christi was the Guardian and Rector. With the financial support from the General Economic Solidarity a new Library and Reference section were built in 2007, under the guidance of Br. Raphie Paliakara, the Guardian and Rector.
In place of the old kitchen and baking area, a new kitchen was constructed. Adjacent to this, a complex of five rooms for friars on the ground floor and ten rooms for students on the first floor were built in 2010. In 2014 on the ground floor the choir and refectory were restructured and on the first floor 20 living rooms were constructed with the help from Economic Solidarity. Br. David Francis, Guardian and Rector had organised all these works.
The old cemetery was started in 1967 when Br Gabriel from Mahim, Mumbai was laid to rest in Calvary. Later when 12 Friars were buried in the same cemetery, it was painfully understood that a traditional floor-type burial ground would be insufficient. Therefore, a wall-mount type of burial place was planned and constructed. This structure with a facility of 84 tombs, was blessed on 19 March 2017.
Besides the administration of the traditional ministries there were many Associations functioning in the Ashram, such as: Catholic Labour Association, Assisi Samajam, SFO, Holy Childhood etc. Though not a Parish, Ashram also organised Catechism Classes. Social activities were very dear to the Ashram from the very beginning. “Calvary Poor Fund,” “Nirmala Dress Manufacturing Company” (1960), “Calvary Social Centre”, “Fr. Claude Charities” (1988) are some of the clear examples of these social apostolates.
