St. George Parish

On 18th February 1946, a small chapel was blessed at Kurumal, dedicated to the universal martyr St. George, under the St. Francis Xavier Parish Church, Thalakotukara. It hosted occasional prayer services and the celebration of Holy Qurbana once a year on his feast day.

With the arrival of Capuchins at Kurumal, given the establishment of a Friary – San Damiano Ashram, the chapel was entrusted to them by His Grace, Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur from November 1996, with the privilege of celebrating Holy Mass daily. Three years later, after the required negotiations, the Arch-Eparchy entrusted the Christian community of Kurumal to the Capuchins, raising the chapel to the status of a full-fledged parish on 10th June 1999 and Br. Jose Pullokkaran OFM. Cap was appointed as its first Vicar.

The first task of the parishioners was to get permission for a cemetery, and they succeeded in obtaining it in the following year. The parishioners united under the leadership of the Vicar, Br. Jose Mundadan OFM. Cap laid the foundation stone for the church on the 22nd of April 2001 and started constructing a new church. It was solemnly consecrated on the following year on 21st April 2004.

In the year 2008, a presbytery was built, and in 2010, a hall for catechism was built too. And later, a grotto was built in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes. In the year 2018, a three-storied chapel was built at Kurumal-Kaiparambu road and blessed on 28th November 2018 by His Grace Mar Andrews Thazhath, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur, together with the re-consecration of the sanctuary of the Church.

The parish is having all the recognised pious associations of the Church like Mathruvedi, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Franciscan secular Order, KCYM, CLC, Altar Boys Association, Choir Group, Prayer Group, Jesus Youth, Holy Childhood, KLM, Catholic Congress.

Besides these, there is the Catechism Unit and its PTA, along with the Central Co-ordination Committee of family units. The 175 families are divided into five units, namely, St. Mary’s, St. Joseph, St. George, St. Francis Assisi and St. Mother Theresa. The Parish has a tri-monthly bulletin, Divyaspandanam, to reach out to the faithful’s daily affairs of the parish and the Church at large. The year 2024 marks the 25th year of its establishment.
